Prison Education

Providing a springboard for individuals who are seeking rehabilitation after time in prison.

In April 2019, the Ministry of Justice unveiled changes to the way prison education is to be managed, replacing the outgoing Offender Learning and Skills Service (OLASS) system with the Prison Education Framework (PEF) which pledged to improve the well-being of prisoners during their sentences and once released.

What is the Prison Education Framework?

The new Prison Education Framework (PEF) covers the majority of education services for prisons up and down the UK, and covers a core curriculum of English, maths, ICT and ESOL.

Prison education matters for three keys reasons:

  • Education leads to employment
  • Education reduces reoffending
  • Education reduces sentence length

At the heart of the recent prison education reform is a belief that governors should have greater control over and responsibility for delivering quality education in prisons, with a particular focus on the basic skills necessary to succeed in life.

Initiatives like the Through the Gate service have found that many prisoners needed substantial help before being released. Finding somewhere to live was cited as a common problem but finding work, making a benefits claim, getting assistance with substance misuse and mental health problems were also major issues. PEF initiatives are designed to help solve them.

How Training Qualifications UK help

We work with three of the four providers (Milton Keynes College, NOVUS and PeoplePlus) who have been awarded the current contracts to deliver regulated qualifications to learners in prisons.

We understand that it can be challenging for Training Providers to meet a wide range of learning and regional needs, but equally it can be a challenging time for the individual as well.

Our diverse range of employability and life skills based qualifications can enhance a learner’s knowledge, confidence and skills in order to improve their chances of employment and reduce the chance of re-offence.

These include:

  • TQUK Level 1 Award in Personal Safety Awareness (RQF)
  • TQUK Level 1 Award in Mental Health Awareness (RQF)
  • TQUK Level 1 Award in Managing Personal Finance (RQF)
  • TQUK Level 1 Award in Job Search and Employment Potential (RQF)
  • TQUK Level 1 Award in Health Living (RQF)
  • TQUK Level 1 Certificate in IT User Skills (RQF)

All our qualifications have been designed to ensure that not only can learners land on their feet when rehabilitating but they can also get on track to build a successful career.

Through our partnerships with Milton Keynes College, NOVUS and PeoplePlus we are constantly refreshing and updating our offer of qualifications which are best placed to meet the needs of learners in prisons.

Karen Rose of Novus said: ‘I have found that TQUK has a refreshingly new approach as an awarding organisation. TQUK is forward thinking and their customer service and support is excellent.’
